Introduction
Stratiomys larvae are generally found in the littoral zone of ponds, lakes, springs, and marshes (Rozkošný 1998). Stratiomys is found everywhere except Australia. It is most diverse in Europe, and only one species, S. rufiventris from Zaire, is known from the Afrotropical region. Stratiomys longicornis, from Europe, Western Asia, and N. Africa, has 15 names in synonymy, the most of any species in Stratiomyidae (Woodley 2001).
Characteristics
Stratiomys is distinguished from other Nearctic Stratiomyini by the spined scutellum with the spines laterally on the scutellum (not approximated) the antenna with five flagellomeres without forming a stylus, and the face not produced or tuberculate (James 1981).
