Introduction
Soldier flies in the genus Hedriodiscus are large, showy, and restricted to the New World. Hedriodiscus varipes is native to Western N. America. The ranges of 6 species include both the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, and the rest are from the Caribbean, Central and South America.
Characteristics
Hedriodiscus is distinguished from other Nearctic Stratiomyini by the spined scutellum, the antenna with six flagellomeres with the last two flagellomeres forming a stylus, crossvein r-m absent and M1 and M3 distinct (James 1981).
