ToL Scientific Core Contributor Registration

ToL scientific core contributors are usually phylogenetic biologists and/or systematists. Before registering as a ToL Scientific Contributor, you should contact your branch coordinator(s) to get your group assignments confirmed. Send an e-mail message to the relevant coordinator(s) describing what groups you would like to cover. Most likely, the branch coordinator will already be aware of your work, however, it is a good idea to include information about your qualifications as an author (i.e., list of relevant publications, brief description of ongoing research projects) as well as a list of possible co-authors you would like to work with. If coordinators are not listed for your group, or if you have trouble getting in touch with them, you can send an inquiry to and we will try to help.

When you sumbit this registration form, a ToL editor will review your information and contact the relevant coordinators. Once we have hear back from the coordinators, we will confirm your registration and send you information on how to get started. Please make sure you are aware of your rights and responsibilities by reading the Tree of Life Privacy Policy and the Terms and Conditions for ToL Scientific Contributors (see below).

Your name will be published on the ToL web site in copyright notices and credit lines for your contributions. You may choose to withhold your e-mail address from publication, but we need to have it on file for legal and administrative purposes.

We encourage you to provide your web page url, institutional affiliation, and mailing address. This information may be published in credit lines of ToL pages and on your personal profile page. Making available this information about our scientific contributors greatly contributes to the transparency and accountability of the ToL project.

Your biographical information will be printed on your personal profile page. It can be accompanied by a small picture (not more than 200x200 pixels, please).

The following information is for administrative purposes:

Please list the groups you are planning on covering for the ToL project. You will be granted editing privileges for these groups after a branch coordinator confirms your assignments. If you have not yet contacted your coordinator, your registration will be held until we can get a coordinator's approval.

Authors of branch pages generally coordinate the development of pages for subgroups. Uncheck I am willing to coordinate ... to opt out of this responsibility. If you want to coordinate only certain subgroups, list those groups in the Comments field.

Listing your potential and confirmed co-authors here will speed up their registration process.

Terms and Conditions for ToL Scientific Contributors

ToL scientific contributors may upload materials to the Tree of Life database and send emails and other communications to Tree of Life staff and contributors, so long as the content is not illegal, obscene, threatening, defamatory, an invasion of privacy, infringing of intellectual property rights or otherwise injurious to third parties. ToL contributors may not use false email addresses, impersonate any person or entity, or otherwise mislead as to the origin of any communication, message or other content. While the Tree of Life Project is not obliged to review all content that is published by contributors on the Tree of Life web site, we reserve the right to delete any contribution, or take action against any registered account, at any time, for any reason.

ToL scientific contributors keep the copyright for materials submitted to the Tree of Life database, and a copyright notice is printed alongside copyright-protected contributions displayed on the ToL web site. By default, ToL contributions are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial License. Contributors who prefer another license can specify alternative default licenses for their text and media contributions. You will get a chance to review your license defaults when you submit this registration, or you can follow the 'Review license defaults' link in the Scientific Materials Manager anytime after you are registered. Licenses for individual contributions can also be specified in the page or media data entry forms. For an overview of available licensing options, see Tree of Life Use of Contributions.

ToL scientific contributors voluntarily grant the ToL Project and its collaborators non-exclusive, royalty-free, and full rights to use the submitted materials according to the selected license. To the best of the contributor's knowledge, use of the contribution by the Tree of Life Project does not violate any intellectual property rights and will not cause injury to any person or entity. The Tree of Life Project or its collaborators take no responsibility and assume no liability for any contribution made by the contributor or a third party.

When registering as a ToL scientific contributor, you release the ToL Project, its employees, contractors, consultants, and collaborators from any and all damages, claims, causes of action, liabilities, and expenses relating to your participation, or exclusion or disqualification from participation, in the Tree of Life Project.
