A widespread neotropical butterfly, ranging from Mexico to Argentina. It frequents disturbed areas and forest edges. Larvae feed on Acanthaceae (DeVries, 1987).
Thought to be a Batesian mimic of Philaethria spp. (Heliconiina).
Nomenclature
This species is often placed in the genus Victorina, and also in many instances misspelled as "steneles", thanks to an error promulgated by Hans Fruhstorfer.Other Names for Siproeta stelenes described in Papilio
