Introduction

Quasimodopsis is a bizarre chlamydopsine genus, known only from a single species, Q. riedeli, and a couple of specimens from New Guinea. No specimens have been collected from any host colonies, so it is only speculatively considered a myrmecophile. The genus was named for its 'humpbacked' appearance, with its highly elevated humeral trichomes, to refer to Victor Hugo's famed 'Hunchback of Notre Dame'.

Quasimodopsis riedeli is phylogenetically isolated among Chlamydopsinae. While recent analyses place it at the base of a large clade of taxa with a reduced or hidden scutellum, it is not closely related to any of these (Caterino & Dégallier, 2007).

Characteristics

Quasimodopsis riedeli exhibits many unusual characteristics. Its pronotum is nearly diamond-shaped, with a prolonged posterior angle hiding the scutellum, and its elevated, oblique sides nearly meeting in front. The trichomes rise high above the prothorax, forming deep transverse incisions, with setae on front and rear edges.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
