Pikroprion sullivani
James S. Miller and Andrew V. Z. BrowerIntroduction
A monobasic genus endemic to the western slopes of the Andes from the Chocó of northwestern Colombia to southwestern Ecuador. Miller (2009) notes that virtually all specimens of this new taxon were collected in the past 25 years at light (unlike most other dioptines, which are rarely attracted to light). Early stages are unknown.Characteristics
A relatively large and striking moth, Pikroprion sullivani is superficially similar to Momonipta albiplaga. However, based on its wing venation and elongate palpi, the moth is more closely-related to Polypoetes and Argentala. Miller (2009) has erected a new genus for this species based on two relatively obvious diagnostic characters (plus major genitalic differences):
- widely bipectinate antennae (subserrate in Argentala)
- short forewing discal cell (long in Polypoetes)
