Oecophylla has the following synapomorphies (Bolton 2003):- Very elongate first funicular segment
- Propodeal lobes present
- Helcium at midheight of abdominal segment III
- Gaster capable of reflexion over mesosoma
- Males with vestigial pretarsal claws
