Notascea
James S. Miller and Andrew V. Z. BrowerIntroduction
A newly described genus for for species formerly associated with Scea. but differing in a number of wing venation and genitalic features (see below), indicating yet another instance of mimetic convergence in Josiini. All Notascea species are rare, and their life histories are unknown. The genus is distributed from southern Peru to Argentina, and occurs in drier habitats that those frequented by most josiines. Miller (2009) mentions fifth, undescribed species of Notascea from the Atlantic coastal forest of Bahia and Espirito Santo (Brazil).Characteristics
Notascea males may be distinguished from superficially similar members of Scea by the presence of a small fovea on the forewing near the anterodistal end of the discal cell (gray shaded area in figure below), and also by genitalic differences. Females may be distinguished by the shape of the antennal shaft, which thickens beyond the base in Notoscea and not in Scea (Miller 2009).References
