Josia turgida
James S. Miller and Andrew V. Z. BrowerIntroduction
Josia turgida is another member of the former aurifusa complex raised to specific status by Miller and Otero (1994). Other than one historical specimen from Colombia, all records are from Venezuela. Like J. aurifusa, larvae have been reared on Passiflora capsularis and P. rubra.Characteristics
Structurally very similar to J. aurifusa, to the extent that Miller (2009) expressed doubt about his (1994) decision to elevate J. turgida from its former status as a form of the former. However, the orange areas of the fore and hindwings are more extensive, with fewer black scales, than in J. aurifusa. There are also subtle differences in larval coloration and female genitalic morphology.References
