Eresia eunice described in Nerëis Hübner, [1806]
Andrew V. Z. BrowerIntroduction
This geographically variable, presumably Batesian mimic of silvaniform Heliconius and ithomiine butterflies, ranges from Nicaragua to Peru.
Nomenclature
E. eunice is the genotype of Eresia, but was described in the genus Nerëis Hübner, 1806, which was a polyphyletic assemblage of superficially similar neotropical "longwings," including Mechanitis polymnia (Ithomiini). In any event, Hübner's Nereis is an invalid junior homonym of Nereis Linnaeus, 1758 (a marine polychaete worm).
