A large neotropical genus with a diverse array of aposematic/mimetic wing patterns. Most species occur in lowland Amazonia, with a few extending into Central America. Larvae are primarily associated with Melastomataceae.Characteristics
Miller (2009) diagnoses the genus with the following features: Elongated labial palpi (especially in males); antennae long and threadlike; metathoracic tympanum small with a deep cavity; male abdomen elongate, female abdomen stout. Wing venation: FW vain RS1 arising from DC (except in D. prolifera, in which it arises from RS); FW M3 and CuA1 separate; HW M3 and CuA1 usually stalked.Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
