Introduction
A diverse, mainly lowland neotropical genus with many species exhibiting quite remarkable mimicry with species of Ithomiinae and Arctiidae. Larvae feed on palms.Characteristics
Morphology is variable. For instance, the metathoracic tympanum is reduced, or lost in some groups, as is the male forewing stridulatory organ (perhaps these losses are correlated).
Synapomorphies that unite the clade include the following (Miller, 2009):
- reduced or absent metathoracic tympanum
- antennae quadripectinate
- wings at least partially hyaline
- (also characters of the wing venation)
