Introduction
This genus was recently erected by Skevington and Yeates (2001). Forty-five valid species are currently treated in Clistoabdominalis but many species of Eudorylas will have to be transferred into the genus as regional revisions proceed. The genus is cosmopolitan.
Characteristics
Male Clistoabdominalis specimens are quite distinctive. Their abdomens are swollen distally and usually lack a membranous area. Females can be difficult to recognize at the generic level. Particularly females of Eudorylas are difficult to differentiate from some female Clistoabdominalis species. Use the key in Skevington and Yeates (2001) to identify Clistoabdominalis.
Regional revisions include: Australia – Skevington (2001) and Europe – Kehlmaier (2005). A revision of the African species of Eudorylini is expected soon (Földvári, submitted).
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
A tribal phylogeny of the Eudorylini (Skevington and Yeates, 2001) includes several Clistoabdominalis exemplars. A phylogeny of the Australian Clistoabdominalis species is presented in Skevington (2001).
