Introduction

Bravaisia is a genus of three species native to Mexico through northern South America. They are distinct among Acanthaceae in being moderately-sized trees, with Bravaisia integerrima reaching some 20 m in height (a few other genera contain small trees, e.g. Louteridium, Ruellia, and Trichanthera). Bravaisia species inhabit riparian or mangrove environments and possess prop roots (see photo above) to 8 m above ground level (Daniel 1988). Flowers of B. integerrima are possibly fragrant, also notable in Acanthaceae.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
