Bembidion stenoderum

Adult External Characteristics
This distinctive species is small and narrow, with a fusiform body. The sides of the prothorax are rather straight; the pronotum is wide posteriorly. The midlateral pronotal seta is absent. The surface of Japanese specimens is shiny (mainland specimens are duller). Mirrors are present on intervals 3 through 5, and in most specimens with faint mirrors on intervals 6 and 7. Setae ed3 and ed5 are in a large pit. Humeral margin of the elytral is long, extended to stria 5; the elytral striae are deeply engraved. There are generally with two setae in ed7 area.
Male Genitalia
Aedeagus slender, with straight basal portion and ventrally bent apex. The sclerite complexes are unusually small, and are far removed from basal orifice. Right lobe of CSC ridged.

Comparison with Related Species
The fusiform shape, deeply engraved striae, and other characters mentioned above are distinctive; specimens are not likely to be misidentified.
Geographic Variation
The larger, duller specimens from the mainland are considered a distinct subspecies (B. s. mukdensis) by Kirschenhofer (1984).
