Apodera
Ralf Meisterfeld and Edward MitchellIntroduction
Apodera vas is one of the most common Nebelids in the southern hemisphere, but so far it has not been found in Europe or North America. This genus was proposed by Jung (1942) without type designation. This was corrected by Loeblich & Tappan (1961). Three species, type: Apodera vas Certes, 1889.
Characteristics
Shell subspherical or ellipsoidal, compressed, constriction between body and swollen neck which tapers from its junction with the body towards the aperture, neck. Aperture oval, slightly arched. Shell composed of collected or predated euglyphid idiosomes in an unstructured cement, transparent. Ovular nucleus.
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Lara et al. (2008) have shown in a SSU rRNA tree that Apodera vas is closely related to Nebela lageniformis from South America (Peru).
Ecology
Apodera species live in mosses (often Sphagnum), litter and organic soils. They feed on a wide range of foods including algae and small Euglyphida like Euglypha, Trinema, Corythion or Tracheleuglypha.
